Small Phrases, Big Difference
There's a moment in every learner's journey when a local switches from speaking slowly and carefully to speaking normally — because you sounded like you belonged. Usually, it's not grammar that earns that shift. It's a handful of everyday expressions.
1. Ya3ni (يعني)
Literally "it means," but used constantly as a filler — like "like" or "you know" in English. Drop it into a sentence when you're thinking, and you instantly sound more natural.
2. Khalas (خلاص)
"Enough," "done," "that's settled." One of the most versatile words in Egyptian Arabic — it closes a negotiation, ends an argument, or simply means "okay, we're good."
3. Ezayak? (ازيك؟)
The real "how are you" — warmer and more common than the textbook version. Say it to a shopkeeper and watch their face change.
4. Yalla (يلا)
"Let's go" / "come on" — said by everyone, all the time, for almost anything.
5. Maafish mushkila (مافيش مشكلة)
"No problem" — the Egyptian answer to almost everything. Use it generously.
None of these appear in most grammar books. They live in conversation — which is exactly why a tutor who speaks with you, not at you, matters so much.
